d)       Open up and press the blue triangle out, pressing seam towards the green.

e)       Lay the dark blue triangle on top of the unit just made, right sides together, long sides matching.  Stitch.  Open up and press seam towards blue triangle.  Proof to 4.5”x4.5”

Unit 2

1. Lay one yellow (5.5”) square on top of a Blue (medium) (5.5”) square and draw a diagonal line from one point to the opposite point.  Then lay one yellow (5.5”) square on top of a light blue (5.5”) square.  Draw a diagonal line from one corner to the opposite corner.  Now sew a line ¼” on each side of the line for each piece.  Cut in half along the line and press open with the seams going to the yellow.  You will have 8 half square triangles; 2 light blue and yellow and 2 yellow and med. blue.

2.  Now lay 1 light blue & yellow half square triangle over a med. Blue and yellow half square triangle.  Lay the yellow of the yellow & light blue on top of the medium blue triangle.  So, light blue against yellow, yellow against med. blue.  Draw a diagonal line from corner to corner and sew a ¼” seam on each side of the line.  Cut on the line.  Press open.  Proof to a 4.5” square.  You will now have 4 quarter square triangles.

Putting it together

Sew a unit 1 to a unit 2.  Look at final block to see which way to lay the units.  Sew a unit 2 to the green 4.5”x4.5” square.  Sew a unit 1 to a unit 2, again looking at the final block to see how to lay the blocks.  Press the seams of the unit 1’s & 2’s to the unit 1.  Press the seam of the unit 2 and green square to the green square.  To the unit 1 & 2 add a unit 1.  2X. To the unit 2 and green square add a unit 2.  Press the seams to the unit 1’s and the unit 2 that is sewn to the green square to the green square.  You now have 3, 3 block units.

Sew the first one to the second one and add the third.

Press seams out and do a final press of the entire block.  Block should measure 12.5x12.5"
